Cooks and the Janitor

To start off this brand new blog, I have decided to start with a photo of the cooks and janitor at Woodsdale Grade school.
For those of you who didn't go home for lunch, you could get a hot meal for 25 cents and as many butter or peanut butter sandwiches as you could beg.
There was a small table where they sold candy as well. My fav was the long, salty pretzels which I think were 2 cents each.
The cooks were always nice and kind to the kids...I never saw one lose her temper. These were the same ladies who cooked for us at Nature Camp in the summer, I think.
In the cafeteria after school, Mr Hile, the Principal taught French to anyone who was interested.
Were we not lucky to go to such a neat school?

  1. The picture is a little hard to make out but I assume that "Shorty" Helms is in the picture. He was another kind soul who put up with so much from kids. Remember the bell that he would ring or I should say the rope he pulled to ring the bell. The rope was next to the little room with the mimeograph machine. My sister, Suzie, just sent me a package of memorabilia that I created in mostly fifth grade. It included our class newspaper (that was mimeographed and barely readable, faded purple print. Lots of interesting news. I'll share some of it at a later date.

  2. Great photo-how ever did you get that?
I remember having to hid under the cafateria's tables during practice bomb scares. And does anyone still have their dog tags? some of us used to swap w/ boyfriends/girlfriends - as a kind of going steady thing.
