Snow Daze
For several years now there has been a debate as to whether we had snow days, either at Woodsdale or later at Triadelphia. I honestly cannot remember school being called off during my childhood. In later years when I became a teacher, first in Massachusetts and later New Hampshire, snow days were commonplace, and I, along with my students would be up half the night awaiting "the call." But thinking back to the 50's and 60's, I seem to remember us always having school. Can other people remember? If school were called off, how were we notified?

Living up on the hill in Oglebay I remember being able to call Triadelphia and saying we were not plowed out on Route 88. I also remember leaving school early at Woodsdale when Dad would pick me up when he left work early because of roads getting bad. Country Club Hill and GC&P were bad along with Falls drive. The teachers at both schools would always tell me to take all my books. I kinda remember getting assignments from those off the Hill.
ReplyDeleteI remember walking from Edgewood St. to Triadelphia once because the bus didn't come. We had a lot of snow. I don't think my mother drove at the time or we didn't have a 2nd car, so walking was the only choice. I do not remember snow days!
ReplyDeleteWe definitely had snow days in the 60's. I lived off Edgewood & went to Edgington Lane. Most of the snow days I remember were for below 0 cold or multiple inches on snow. In spite of weather so inclimate no school could be held, we all grabbed sleds & spent the day on the grassy hill that connected (& still does) Fairview & Vista Aves.
ReplyDeleteUnlike today, those snow days were few & far between. Since school was within walking distance for the majority of students, it took something major to close it up.
